After several weeks of a hiatus and some lack of motivation on my writing front, I’ve returned with the Sound of Revolution part 7. The entire purpose of this series is to bring attention to modern music that has a political message consistent with punk ideals, regardless of the genre of music. Punk is an attitude and a belief system, that the system is corrupt and that the people have the power to unite and make the world better. Fuck fascism, fuck capitalism, fuck exploitation of people everywhere.

Up until this point we have limited ourselves to one song per artist, but going forward we will start including more songs from artists we’ve already highlighted. Some of these artists have entire discographies of songs that highlight injustice and embrace the message of unity, community building, and highlighting injustice. This is our attempt to shine a light on those messages.

Catbite- Police Man (Kick Me In the Head) This song was originally written by Sic and MAD, but Catbite rejuvenated the track and updated a couple lyrics that remains relevant as long as we live in a police state where police are in charge of investigating their own crimes, a world where the government works for the rich and execute the poor while pitting the working class against one another.

This song by The Keymasters has a name that’s as long as the song itself “You Boys Need a Role Model? Captain America Would Love to Have You” is only 30 seconds, but mocks the trend of Punisher skulls With the thin blue line flag pointing out the irony that “Frank Castle hates the police- as the comic book hero was known for killing corrupt cops and was written as an indictment against the police. Do not let fascists repurpose anti fascist stories for their benefit.

Brand new artist Annalies Tang released their debut single in January titled “Jasmine Tea”. This track addressed the intersection of sexism, racism, and fetishism that Asian women endure in western societies and is a reminder of the intersectionality of bigotry and oppression.

Australian artist Kobie Dee’s newest song, “Statistic” released at the end of January addresses the realities of systemic racism in Australia dealing with mass incarceration, and all of the other ways that racist systems fuck up society, from the psychological toll it plays on individuals to the way it leads to lower wages drug use, public perception, and more.

Florida based punk band Magnolia Park wrote “Don’t Be Racist” dealing with their experiences of discrimination within the punk community, experiencing bigotry for not fitting stereotypes, from people pretending to be open minded. Meanwhile the song also addresses token support from people who say “Black Lives Matter” whole it’s trendy but then do nothing to support Black Lives once the slogan loses its power.

That last part of the song dovetails with the Middle Aged Queers “This Song is sponsored by Absolut Vodka”, which is exactly what it sounds like it’s about. Token capitalism and corporate appropriation of identity for the purpose of marketing, while the song also pays tribute to the people who fought police, protested, rioted, and stood up for queer rights. Progress is not done for profit, and won’t be sponsored by your favorite alcohol or department store.

Plastic Presidents wrote “Critical” about a variety of problems in our society, but asked what we are doing to fix them. Change begins at the local level, and no level is more local than ourselves. We need to be open to change and to growth, and to acknowledge that we are not perfect, and not to strive for perfect, but to be willing to get better. This is the first step in our journey, and one that must be constantly revisited.
